McDonald's
Invitational Carnival - Bellambi

Ronald
McDonald proudly led the carnival march past and later
took the time to pose for a fun photo with the Bellambi march
past team at their home beach.

Brianna
McInally (below right) with Aimee Burzacott from Woonona SLSC.
Brianna is under 10 and has competed in carnivals this season.
She has entered all the swim events and has completed the
course on each occasion. She has only beaten 2 or 3 kids home
all season. At the McDonald's Carnival she decided to
attempt the board for the first time. The results were inspiring
but she would not stop until she finished. I stood on the
beach with her dad John and we were so proud of her effort.
Aimee has placed twice in the swim events in the same age
group.

At the McDonald's Carnival Woonona received two medals
(Bronze) for which they were very happy. Brendan Hatton on
his first attempt came third in the under 11 Iron man. He
has only just taken up the board. His father is currently
doing his bronze. Aimee Burzacott finished third in the under
10 swim. She is a very good still water swimmer and will get
higher placers when she gets used to the surf. Woonona entered
a team in the Rookie challenge and all had a great time. They
are all now very keen.
Woonona
SLSC Growing Strong
Woonona boat crews have competed all season and with new rowers
are gaining confidence all the time. They have also gained
three more IRB driver awards and the club is going to compete
if there is a series in Autumn.
Woonana
have gained 9 new Bronze and have 6 in various stages of the
award. Their patrolling members have gone from 12 last Christmas
to 35 now. Congratulations
Woonona, your hard work is paying off !

Restaurants is pictured with Junior Life Savers of the Year
Emily Costello from Sandon Point and Chris Astill from the
Helensburgh Stanwell Park Club. Both Emily and Chris will
represent Illawarra in the State Life Saver of the Year Finals
at Shellharbour. Congratulations to you both.

At
the carnival I had pleasure in announcing the new McDonald's
Age Managers programme which will provide 540 age managers
kits, 3,000 passports, 3,000 member identification cards,
360 age managers uniforms and 3,000 certificates of attainment
for each award attained by a junior.
This
programme funded by McDonald's supports our aims of
providing the best available levels of development, training
and education to our members in the Illawarra.
Australia
Day Celebrations Belmore Basin

Rookie
Life Savers from Thirroul, Woonona, Sandon Point, Bellambi,
Towradgi & Windang participated in the Illawarra Mercury
Rookie Challenge on Australia Day at Belmore Basin. The event
consisted of a tube rescue, assistance to the patient with
the new Surf Rescue Boogie boards and a 2 person assesment
back on the beach. It was a fantastic way to profile our Rookie
Life Savers and best of all we all had fun!

After
the Rookie Challenge Don Allan - Director of Life Saving and
our Rookies (below) performed various powercraft rescues for
the crowd of 20,000 that had assembled to watch the spectacle.

Sydney
Water Surf Club Premiership
The
first event at any Sydney Water Surf Club Premiership Carnival
is the Open Put The Sydney Water Flags Up. We usually have
only one entry but the competition manual is ignored and the
event always goes ahead. Dave Sommers will also be seen last
off the beach in the afternoon tirelessly packing away the
flags after another great day of competition. Thankyou Dave
for your personal support of the series and the sponsorship
dollars provided by Sydney Water.

The
final round is at North Wollongong on Sat the 7th of February.
Check out the progress pointscores via this link. Sydney
Water Results Round 3.

Another
face you will see on the beach is Illawarra Life Member Ron
Bradley OAM. Ron faithfully dedicates his time as an official
to ensure the smooth and fair running of the carnival. When
Ron is at the finishing line watching guys like Wes Berg cross
the line I am sure he remembers that day in 1955 at North
Steyne beach when he Won the Australian Open Surf Race. Ron
has been involved in Surf Life Saving for over 60 years. Thankyou
Ron for your continued support.
