Corrimal
SLSC Benefit Night - 1/8/03
.
Times
are pretty tough for fund-raising in Surf Life Saving but
Corrimal SLSC seem to have won Gold. At their recent Sportsman's
Auction they were able to raise good dollars to invest in
new rescue equipment for their club. The night was well attended
with 560 generous supporters contributing to such a worthy
cause. Corrimal have been hit hard with theft and vandalism
and the money raised will go towards needed rescue equipment.
Mike Whitney is to be heartily applauded for his commitment
in assisting his dear friend Ted Tobin in coming to the rescue.
Youth Forum at Windang Bowls Club - 14/09/03

It
was fantastic see 20 young lifesavers from the Windang SLSC
come along and participate in a very special youth forum and
to have their say on what the club should be doing for the
younger members. Listening to young members of any surf club
is a process we are learning. Just don't take to long to get
your head around the fact that young people are totally switched
on and brimming with fully sic ideas that will definitely
help in developing your club.

After
a wonderful feed of hamburgers, chunky chips and coke it was
down to the greens to learn the finer points of lawn bowls.
Congratulations to Steve Watson, Kaye Norris & Kel Norris
for the commitment you are showing to the listening to the
ideas of young members at Windang SLSC.
Training and Assessing Enters New Era - 18/10/03
Chief
Instructors from Illawarra Clubs attended a two day training
weekend to introduce them to the usage of the new 32nd training
manual resources and the new assessment procedures. We were
able to recruit the services of Bob Starkey to facilitate
the weekend. Bob has been conducting similar courses in other
States and TheTerritory.

Above
photo shows Nathan Mitchell from North Gong demonstrating
training skills in the making of a "dead chicken".
Steve MacDonald watches intently and Barry Blakley takes some
relevant notes.

The
younger Chief Instructors and Barry took to the new concepts
with ease and could see the move into the Australian Qualifications
Framework and achieving Nationally Acredited Awards as of
great benefit to members. Training under the new 32nd edition
and having new awards assessed by someone holding the Units
of Competency - Plan Assessment, Conduct Assessment &
Review Assessment from the Cert IV in Assessment and Workplace
Training means candidates can qualify for the Nationally Accredited
award of Certificate II in Public Safety under the Australian
Qualifications Framework. Candidates who are not trained and
assessed in this way will have to apply through the RPL process
for their Cert II and there will be a cost associated with
this application.

Sandon
Point Club House Falling Down
Windang
SLSC may see work on their new building start in the new year
but when will we see Sandon Point in a facility that is safe
and meets the needs of their surrounding community? At present
the whole verandah on the Sandon Point clubhouse has been
fenced off as it is unsafe. The outcomes of 12 months of building
inspections and ranking of major capital projects across Surf
Life Saving Illawarra has determined that the Number 1. Priority
is a solution to the Sandon Point dilemma.
Coalcliff
SLSC Gear Shed Roof Collapses
When
Junior lifesaving members of Coalcliff last entered their
gear shed they were greeted with a roof that had travelled
to the floor. The replacement of the gear shed and temporary
patrol room is also at the top of the building priority list
for obvious reasons. Very fortunately the rusted metal roof
had collapsed before the nippers went for their gear and not
during.

Public
Liability Insurance Crisis
After
my meeting with the Surf Life Saving NSW Executive last weekend
I can report that the insurance premium levy per member will
be reduced by approximately $3 per member. This comes as great
relief and is due mainly to the NSW State Government prioritising
$150,000 from the recent $1 million dollar grant to SLSNSW
to the payment of the Broadform Public Liability Policy. SLSNSW
has asked that the current Tax Invoices be paid and they will
promptly issue a refund when the exact policy refund be known.
However I do advise that if your club does not have the funds
in the bank to pay the initial invoice then please give me
a call and I can assist.
Bellambi
SLSC Education Strategy - 29/10/03

Les
Nicholls had a call from an old member Teagan Proctor who
is working temporarily at a child minding centre in Kenny
St Wollongong asking if he could talk to the kids on safety
at the beach. Ben Drew, Gina & Les went to the Pre-school
on Wed 29.10.03 and above is a photo that tells it all.
Good
on you Bellambi job well done !!
